Om Mani Padme Hum by Desert Rose is a beautiful compilation of mantra’s found in Buddhism. Buddhism is a faith counded by Siddartha Gautama ( “the Buddha”) more than 2500 years ago in India. This is a path of practice and spiritual development leading to insight into the true nature of reality. One of the practices is chanting. Om Mani Padme Hum is one of the ancient Buddhist mantra’s translated exactly as ” Praise to the jewel of the Lotus” The manta’s essence is powerful and pure. This six syllable mantra is seen as the condensed form of all the teachings. Mani means “Jewel” or bead, Padme is the “lotus flower” and Hum represents the spirit of enlightenment. In Tibetan Buddhism this is considered the most ubiquitous mantra, carved into mani stones and prayer flags and wheels. Another mantra central to Buddhism is the heart mantra, the heart mantra is also referred to as Om gate gate. This is one of the most used mantra’s in Buddhism and Om gate gate is not that easy to grasp as it touches on the essence of nothingness that is found in everything. Loosely translated, the heart mantra means ” gone, gone, everyone gone to the other shore, awakening” The heart mantra is the single most recited, copied and studied scripture in East Asian Buddhism. It is recited by adherents of Mahayana schools of Buddhism regardless of sectarian affiliation. These two mantras are the focal point of the album by Desert Rose and they end these two powerful mantras with two gentle instrumental tracks to sit and contemplate the vibration of the mantra’s. The longer meditation track is called Zen waters. It uses instruments such as the Zen harp taking one on a journey into the far East exploring vast space and consciousness. Zen is a Japanese school of Mahayana Buddhism emphasizing the value of meditation. The album ends with an uplifting instrumental track titled Asian Dawn.
